Dakota Nature Park

Brookings, SD

A former cuty landfill site with woodlands, fishing ponds, and open spaces was redeveloped into a nature park that includes a system of biking and walking trails, accessible fishing piers and shoreline access points, canoe launches, picnic shelters, interpretive exhibits, wayfinding signs, mountain bike trail, restored prairie, and nature center.

In 2010, Big Muddy developed a park master plan for the City of Brookings. The park’s vision was defined through a series of stakeholder interviews and community input meetings. After completing the master plan, Big Muddy was involved in designing bio-retention gardens, living roof shade structures, interpretive exhibits, and wayfinding signage. The $2,300,000 project was completed over a three-year period.
