Aurora Cooperative Headquarters Site Improvements

Aurora, NE

The Aurora Cooperative is a multi-purpose agricultural cooperative providing service and expertise in grain, agronomy, animal nutrition and energy. Big Muddy Workshop and its architecture partner provided design services for the Co-op’s new corporate headquarters.

During the concept design phase, the Workshop worked with the architect on the layout of the headquarters building, parking areas, drives and outdoor spaces. The building was sited to maximize views of the agricultural land to the east. Site materials including pedestrian pavements, site walls and site furnishings were specifically selected to reflect the rural, agricultural setting of the site.

Two exterior plazas serve the various needs of the Co-op. A covered, main entrance plaza greets visitors to the facility. The west plaza provides gathering and dining space for staff and visitors, and for special events. It accommodates 40, and movable, café-style seating allows flexible use of the space. A low stone wall encompasses the plazas, site stairs, and ramps, visually tying the site features and stone-clad foundation of the building together. Native prairie plantings surrounding the building and exterior plazas complements the building’s architecture and integrates with the existing landscape.
