Iowa West Boys & Girls Club of Omaha Ranch
This day camp in Carter Lake, IA serves boys and girls throughout the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. To provide the campers with a fun, learning activity, the sand play area hides artifacts important to the historic and cultural legacy of the river. The camp has two sets of artifacts, with an accompanying interpretive exhibit that describes the buried items and their importance.The first set theme highlights animals and people who traveled along the river and their tools. The travelers include Native Americans, gold miners, wooly mammoths and today's campers. The artifacts for this theme are buried tools include pottery, tusks, binoculars and powder horns. The second theme features animals that live in and along the river, including otters, turtles, least terns, and sturgeon. Cast stone replicas of the animals are buried within the sand.
