Heron Haven Wetlands Educational Site 




This undeveloped wetland in Omaha, NE includes both undisturbed
      and disturbed wetlands. The Audubon Society of Omaha teamed with
      the Papio-Missouri River NRD to rescue this unique site from
      development into an apartment complex. The goal was to educate
      the public about the joy and value of wetlands and to preserve
      the area for the future.

     

     

     The strategy was to preserve the integrity of the undisturbed
      wetland, since it is a rare environment in Omaha. However, to
      allow the public to enjoy this unique environment and develop
      a commitment for protecting wetlands, an accessible boardwalk
      with a large viewing deck and a primitive trail to a wildlife
      observation blind allow limited access to the edges of the undisturbed
      wetland. Educational facilities are planned for the disturbed
