Great Bear Recreation Area



      Great Bear is a 225-acre winter sports park east of Sioux Falls,
      along the Big Sioux River. The site includes rugged bluffs, oak
      forests, native prairies and spectacular views of the Sioux Falls
      skyline. The existing winter sports development will be supplemented
      with accessible walks and hiking trails to allow and encourage
      year-round use of this beautiful site. The trail master plan,
      developed by the Workshop, identifies accessible walk paths,
      and more challenging hiking trails, with scenic overlooks along
      each trail type. Interpretive wayside exhibits, located at the
      central trailhead structure and at key points along the trail,
      will educate and sensitize visitors to the fragile nature of
      the site's gravelly soils. Winter uses of the hiking trails will
      include Nordic and skate cross-country skiing.
